About this book
Nobody surprises—or unsettles—readers quite like DeAnna Knippling, veteran author of over 80 books. Sharp-eyed mystery writer Liz Hicks seethes in the wreckage of her Colorado mountain home—books and knickknacks scattered everywhere, thunder shaking the tarped-up windows, the house heavy with the smell of spilled cleaning supplies and the lingering ghost of a leather motorcycle jacket nobody wears anymore. The burglars only took one thing from the chaos: her dead husband’s carved longhorn skull. And to Liz's grief-poisoned, plot-twisty instincts, the “accident” that killed him still reeks of something stronger. Murder. A cunning, wicked cozy mystery about the dark side of nice people. —This one is about playing with the cozy mystery trope: the detective is an amateur with an interesting job in a vaction-able location, nothing bad ever happens in direct view, and it's more about the satisfaction of solving mysteries than anything else. After ghostwriting a number of cozies for clients (and getting kind of bored with them), I asked myself, "How far can I take those boundaries?" A Dark and Cozy Night is a cozy-ish mystery that sticks to the main cozy mystery rules…but goes a little nerdier and a little darker, more in the vein of a Ruth Ware or an Agatha Christie than a mystery about a dead body, a bookshop and/or pet store, and a cheeky cat. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
